IAC Sugarcane Center

The IAC Sugarcane Center conducts multidisciplinary work within the IAC Sugarcane Program, which involves genetic enhancement, soil science, characterization of production environments, phytotechnics, pest and disease management and crop estimates. IAC relies on a experimentation network in 11 Brazilian States, with about 160 associated companies.

The results of the works include the development of 20 IAC – 19 varieties for the sugar and alcohol sector and one for forage purposes. The program also gives rise to excellent technological packages, which have taken the competitiveness of the sugarcane produced in São Paulo to other Brazilian States and abroad (Mexico, Central America Countries and Africa).

The excellence of the IAC Sugarcane Program is sustained by the multidisciplinary team of researchers and technicians, supported by a structure that includes the Hybridization Station in Bahia – a reference in Brazil and the world —, destined for the hybridization campaign. The expansion extends the chances for crossings and for the achievement of the desired plants for modern sugarcane plantations. It also relies on the Photoperiod Chamber, the fi rst in Brazil, a structure that makes it possible to anticipate by 90 days the plant fl owering process. IAC research works also count on Ambicana, responsible for the qualifi cation of production environments, making it possible for the producer to resort to optimized varietal management. In one decade, Ambicana extended its range of infl uence over 1,200 hectares in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás, Bahia, Pernambuco, Tocantins, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná. Previclimacana conducts updated sugarcane production estimates on a monthly basis.
